Location

Shigar Fort is located in Shigar Valley, about 32 kilometers (20 miles) from Skardu in Gilgit-Baltistan, northern Pakistan. Nestled against the dramatic backdrop of the Karakoram Mountains, the fort overlooks lush fields, poplar trees, and traditional Balti villages, making it one of the most scenic heritage sites in the region.

Background & History

Shigar Fort, locally known as Fong Khar (meaning Palace on the Rock), dates back to the 17th century. It was built by the Raja of Shigar, the ruling dynasty of the region, and served as a royal residence and administrative center.

In the early 2000s, the fort was carefully restored by the Aga Khan Cultural Service Pakistan (AKCSP) in collaboration with the royal family. The restoration preserved traditional Balti architecture using original materials such as mud, stone, and timber. Today, Shigar Fort stands as a symbol of cultural revival and has been transformed into a living heritage museum and boutique hotel, managed by Serena Hotels.

• By Air: Fly to Skardu Airport from Islamabad (weather permitting). From Skardu, Shigar Fort is about a 45-minute drive.
• By Road: Travelers can reach Skardu by road from Gilgit via the Karakoram Highway and Skardu Road. From Skardu city, taxis and private vehicles are easily available to Shigar Valley.
