One of the main attractions is Shandur Lake, a beautiful freshwater lake located near the polo ground. The lake reflects the surrounding mountains and provides a peaceful setting for photography, bird watching, and relaxation.

The pass also serves as an important watershed between the river systems of Gilgit-Baltistan and Chitral. Its alpine meadows provide seasonal grazing grounds for livestock and support a variety of native wildlife and bird species.

The annual Shandur Polo Festival, usually held in late June or early July, brings together polo teams from Gilgit-Baltistan and Chitral for traditional freestyle polo matches. Location

Shandur Pass is located on the border of District Ghizer, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Upper Chitral District, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. It lies approximately:

·       220 kilometres from Gilgit City

·       50 kilometres from Phander Valley

·       150 kilometres from Chitral Town

The pass is accessible only during the summer months, as heavy snowfall closes the road during winter.

How to Access

From Islamabad

Travel from Islamabad to Gilgit by air or by road via the Karakoram Highway. From Gilgit City, continue on the Gilgit–Ghizer Road through Gahkuch, Gupis, Khalti, and Phander Valley before reaching Shandur Pass. The road journey from Gilgit to Shandur usually takes 6 to 7 hours, depending on road conditions.

Alternatively, visitors may travel from Islamabad to Chitral by road or air (subject to flight availability) and then continue to Shandur Pass via Mastuj and Laspur during the summer season.

From Skardu

Travel from Skardu to Gilgit via the Skardu–Gilgit Road and then continue through Gahkuch, Gupis, Khalti, and Phander Valley to Shandur Pass. Depending on road conditions, the journey usually takes 10 to 12 hours, and many visitors choose to stay overnight in Gahkuch or Phander.

From Chitral

From Chitral Town, travel north through Mastuj and Laspur to Shandur Pass. This scenic mountain road remains open only during the summer months. Depending on road conditions, the journey takes approximately 4 to 5 hours.

June to September

These months offer the most pleasant weather and fully accessible roads. The meadows are green, wildflowers are in bloom, and outdoor activities can be enjoyed comfortably.

October to May

Heavy snowfall and extremely cold temperatures generally make the road to Shandur Pass inaccessible. Visitors should avoid planning trips during this period unless road access has been officially confirmed.

Travel Advisory

Your safety and the protection of the fragile mountain environment are important. Please follow these guidelines throughout your journey:

·       Check the latest weather forecast and road conditions before leaving, especially during the monsoon season or when travelling at high altitude.

·       Confirm that the Shandur Road is open before starting your journey, as snowfall or landslides may result in temporary closures.

·       Mountain roads are narrow, steep, and winding. Drive carefully and remain alert throughout the journey.

·       Avoid over-speeding and always obey traffic rules and road signs.

·       Visitors unfamiliar with mountain driving should hire an experienced local driver who understands the terrain and weather conditions.

·       Ensure your vehicle is in good mechanical condition, particularly the brakes, tyres, suspension, and cooling system.

·       Fill your fuel tank before leaving Phander or Chitral, as fuel stations are not available at Shandur Pass.

·       Carry sufficient drinking water, snacks, warm clothing, rain protection, a first aid kit, essential medicines, and a fully charged mobile phone or power bank.

·       Because Shandur is located at high altitude, walk slowly, stay hydrated, and avoid strenuous physical activity immediately after arrival if you experience shortness of breath or dizziness.

·       Keep children under close supervision at all times, especially near lakes, streams, steep slopes, cliffs, and rocky areas.

·       Do not enter lakes, streams, or rivers unless the area has been officially declared safe. Mountain waters are extremely cold, and water depths and currents may change unexpectedly.

·       Wear warm layered clothing, as temperatures can change rapidly even during summer.

·       Respect local customs, traditions, and the privacy of nearby communities.

·       Do not enter private gardens, orchards, farms, or residential property without the owner's permission.

·       Do not pick fruits, flowers, or crops from orchards and fields, as they are an important source of income for local farmers.

·       Protect the alpine environment by avoiding littering. Carry your waste back or dispose of it in designated bins.

·       Do not disturb wildlife or damage vegetation, and avoid making excessive noise in natural areas.
