Gateway to the Great Karakoram

Shigar holds immense historical and geographical significance as it lies on an ancient trading route connecting Central Asia with the subcontinent. For centuries, the valley served as a cultural and commercial corridor for traders, explorers, and travelers.

The district is famously known as the gateway to the Karakoram Range and the starting point for expeditions to some of the world’s highest peaks. At the head of the Braldo Valley lies the legendary Baltoro Glacier, stretching about 35 miles, which leads to K2 (8,611 m / 28,265 ft)—the world’s second-highest mountain.

Location

District Shigar is located in Gilgit-Baltistan, northern Pakistan, approximately 30 minutes’ drive from Skardu. The district stretches over an area of about 8,500 square kilometers and extends from Skardu to Askole, covering nearly 170 kilometers along the Shigar Valley.

By Air: Fly from Islamabad to Skardu Airport (subject to weather). Shigar is a short 30–45-minute drive from Skardu.
By Road: Reach Skardu via the Karakoram Highway and Skardu Road. From Skardu city, Shigar District is easily accessible by car or taxi.
